FREEING YOUR ENGLISH VOICE
Six month course in Madrid – 2 hours per week
AIM: To free the English voice, allowing students to work confidently with even difficult texts in English and for actors to work without worrying about the limitations of an accent.
PART A:
ONE: VOWELS AND CONSONANTS
AIM: To examine and discover the sensorial aspect of sounds in English: vowels and consonants. The normal connection we have of speech in which words are projected from the frontal lobe of the brain to the mouth, will be redirected in a more holistic sequence that moves between brain – solar plexus – body – mouth.
PROCEDURE: All vowel and consonant sounds in English are investigated separately, each one being given a colour, and a part of the body in which they are naturally located.
The physical effects of these different sounds are explored and enjoyed, as are their physical and emotional potentials.
The energy of sounds are liberated.
We discover the non-verbal communication and potentials in the sounds themselves.
TWO: WORDS AND IMAGES
AIM: To examine and discover the emotional qualities of words in English and establish a sequence that moves from: printed word – eye – image – breath – feeling – experience/memory/emotion – sound – spoken word
PROCEDURE: We will look at words on their own, out of the context of sentences, in order to see how words can “reveal” things rather than just “describe” them.
We will explore the relationship of these words with:
1) The senses
2) The emotions
3) Memory
4) Personal Association
5) Imagination
6) Vowels/Consonants Dynamics
As such we will explore: image words; emotion words; state-of-being words; active words; impressionistic words
THREE: WORDS IN PHRASES
AIM: To examine and discover the emotional, image-rich, impressionistic qualities and potentials of complete sentences in English.
PROCEDURE: We will be examining a Shakespearean sonnet in English in order to find the different ranges and energy levels, letting the poetry itself activate voice and body through channels of vowels, consonants, images, senses and emotions.
We will apply this methodology to another famous text by Shakespeare: the famous “To be or not to be” monologue from Hamlet.
PART B:
We will now be ready to work intensively on other texts in English. Initially we will stay with pieces by Shakespeare and other poets, but at the end of the course we will adapt this methodology to more modern styles of English and its potential for working with film and TV scripts as well as plays.
